Hydro is a conceptual skincare brand designed to nourish the skin and promote self-care as well as care for the Earth. The beauty industry is searching for solutions that balance the market’s expectations for elevated design, unique and complex ingredients, and environmental responsibility — tricky when “natural” is often a selling point.

Hydro suggests a solution to this critical issue with ingredients that are carefully selected to minimize the carbon footprint and recycled packaging that uses biodegradable shrink sleeves. This precludes the use of many embellishments such as foils, so Hydro uses an alternative embellishment that catches the eye by turning light into motion.

Fathom’s new effect, Foliage, is a gently rippling organic texture. When overprinted with solid color or gradients, it can look very much like holographic foil. But Fathom effects are software-generated patterns printed in standard ink on both sides of a clear substrate such as shrink film—so they are recyclable, don’t require additional materials or processes, and give the designer more control over color.

I used the Fathom Effects Illustrator plugin to make and upload changes in the design, updating the 3D viewer in Fathom Designer.

If you want to play with this design, create a free Fathom Designer account and copy the project. Then you can download the design files or try on one of our dozens of other motion/dimensional effects.
